How to Connect Two Monitors to a Laptop Using a USB-C Hub
Share
Working from one small laptop screen can quickly become frustrating. You may constantly switch between emails, documents, online meetings and browser tabs.
A dual-monitor setup gives you more room to work. You could attend an online interview on one screen while keeping your notes open on another, compare documents side by side or manage several work applications without repeatedly changing windows.
In this guide, we explain how to connect two monitors to a laptop, what equipment you may need and what to check before buying a USB-C hub or external monitor.
Why connect two monitors to your laptop?
A second monitor does more than make your desk look professional. It can make everyday work easier and more comfortable.
- Remote and hybrid work
- Online interviews and meetings
- Studying and online learning
- Spreadsheets and business administration
- Research and writing
- Graphic design and content creation
- Managing email while working in another application
- Building an organised home-office workstation
You can use your laptop as one screen and add an external monitor, or connect two external monitors where your laptop and operating system support it.
What do you need?
- A laptop with a compatible USB-C port
- One or two external monitors
- A USB-C hub or docking station with video outputs
- Compatible HDMI, VGA, DVI or DisplayPort cables and adapters
- A compatible laptop charger where required
Before ordering anything, inspect the ports on your laptop and monitors. This will help you choose the correct hub, cables and adapters.
Check your laptop’s USB-C port first
This is the most important step.
USB-C describes the shape of the connection, but not every USB-C port supports the same functions. Some ports only transfer data or charge the laptop.
To connect a monitor through a USB-C hub, the laptop’s USB-C port must support video output. This is commonly called DisplayPort Alt Mode. Some compatible ports may carry a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol, but markings differ between manufacturers.
Check your laptop’s specifications or contact its manufacturer if you are uncertain. Having a USB-C port does not automatically mean that the laptop can support external monitors through that port.
How to connect two monitors using a USB-C hub
A suitable multiport hub can turn one compatible USB-C connection into several useful workstation connections.
The Leefair 11-in-1 USB-C Hub includes HDMI and VGA display outputs, Gigabit Ethernet, four USB 3.0 ports, SD and TF/microSD card slots, a 3.5mm audio connection and up to 100W Power Delivery pass-through.
1. Connect the hub to your laptop
Insert the hub’s USB-C connector into a laptop USB-C port that supports video output.
2. Connect the first monitor
Connect the first monitor to the hub’s HDMI output using a compatible HDMI cable. If your monitor does not have HDMI, check whether a correctly directed adapter is required.
3. Connect the second monitor
Connect the second monitor to the hub’s VGA output using a VGA cable. HDMI carries a digital signal, while VGA is an older analogue connection, so the image quality and available resolution may differ between the two displays.
4. Connect your accessories
The hub’s other ports can be used for compatible accessories such as a keyboard, mouse, flash drive, external storage, Ethernet cable, memory card, speakers or headphones.
5. Connect power if required
If your laptop supports charging through USB-C, connect a compatible USB-C charger to the hub’s Power Delivery port. Power Delivery is a pass-through feature: the hub does not generate power, so a suitable charger is still required.
6. Adjust your display settings
On Windows:
- Right-click an empty area on the desktop.
- Select Display settings.
- Scroll to Multiple displays.
- Select Extend these displays.
- Arrange the screens so their positions match your desk.
- Choose your preferred main display.
On a Mac:
- Open System Settings.
- Select Displays.
- Arrange the detected screens.
- Choose your preferred resolution and main display.
Display behaviour differs between laptop models and operating systems. Some computers may extend content across multiple screens, while others may duplicate or mirror the same image.
Can the 11-in-1 USB-C hub connect two monitors?
The hub provides two confirmed video outputs: HDMI and VGA. These can be used to attach compatible displays.
However, simultaneous independent extended-display support depends on the laptop’s USB-C capabilities, graphics hardware, operating system, display settings and selected resolutions. We therefore do not promise that every USB-C laptop will support two independently extended external monitors.
If the computer supports both external displays, you may be able to build a three-screen workspace using the laptop screen plus two monitors. Confirm this capability for your specific laptop before ordering.
What if your laptop does not detect the monitor?
- Confirm that the monitor is switched on.
- Select the correct input source on the monitor.
- Reconnect the hub and display cables.
- Test each monitor separately.
- Confirm that the laptop’s USB-C port supports video output.
- Check for operating-system and graphics-driver updates.
- Restart the laptop with the hub connected.
- Test another compatible cable if available.
The problem may be caused by the laptop, cable, display settings or an incompatible USB-C port—not necessarily the hub or monitor.
HDMI, VGA or DisplayPort: which should you use?
HDMI
HDMI is a widely used digital connection that carries video and can also carry audio. It is normally the preferred option when both the hub and monitor support it.
VGA
VGA is useful for older monitors and projectors. It carries an analogue video signal and does not carry audio.
DisplayPort
DisplayPort is common on professional office monitors and business computers. If the hub or laptop does not have DisplayPort, you may need a compatible adapter. Check the required signal direction carefully.
Choose a monitor for your workspace
Leefair’s tested pre-owned monitors offer practical value for home offices, professional workstations, study spaces and secondary-screen setups.
- Lenovo 24-inch WUXGA IPS Monitor — adjustable stand with DisplayPort, DVI and VGA.
- Dell 24-inch WUXGA IPS Monitor — a spacious professional display with DisplayPort, DVI and VGA.
Connection note: These two monitors do not include an HDMI input. Connecting one to the hub’s HDMI output requires a suitable HDMI-to-DVI solution, while the VGA connection can connect directly with a VGA cable. Confirm all ports and cable directions before ordering.
Build a workspace that works around you
You do not need an unnecessarily expensive computer to improve your working environment. A carefully selected pre-owned monitor and compatible USB-C hub can turn a laptop into a more practical home-office, study or business workstation.
At Leefair, we focus on useful technology that helps people build productive setups without unnecessary expense.
